Category III codes are used for tracking new and emerging technologies, procedures, and services in the healthcare industry. Even though these codes might initially be denied for reimbursement by Medicare and other insurance providers, there are several important reasons why they are needed:

  1. Data Collection: Category III codes allow for the collection of data on the use and outcomes of new procedures and technologies. This data is crucial for evaluating the safety, efficacy, and overall impact of these innovations on patient care.
  2. Clinical Trials and Research: These codes facilitate the tracking and analysis of new medical techniques and treatments in clinical trials and other research settings. This can provide evidence needed for future approval and coverage decisions.
  3. Future Coverage: the use of Category III codes helps build a case for future reimbursement. If a procedure of technology demonstrates significant benefits and cost-effectiveness through collect data, it may eventually be assigned a Category I code and be eligible for coverage.
  4. Innovation Encouragement: By providing a mechanism to document and study new developments, Category III codes encourage innovation and the advancement of medical science and technology.
  5. Professional Use and Training: these codes help professionals document and bill for new procedures, ensuring that there is a recognized way to report and track their usage. Which is essential for training and professional development.

The following Category III codes and parenthetical notes were accepted and/or revised at the September 2023 CPT Editorial Panel meeting for the 2025 CPT production cycle. However, due to Category III code’s early-release policy, these codes are effective on July 1, 2024, following the six-month implementation period, which begins January 1, 2024.

In summary, while Category III codes may not immediately lead to reimbursement, they are crucial for gathering evidence and supporting the potential future adoption and coverage of new medical technologies and procedures.
